Ubuntu 8.04 LTS (Hardy Heron)
Ubuntu Hardy Heron has just released today (following Feisty Fawn and Gutsy Gibbon releases of 2007), and yes, many servers are extremely overloaded as expected! I am downloading now, but looks like it will take 6 or 7 hours!

MacBook 2008

Last week, I got my third Apple computer. First one that I have was the Mac Mini (got it in 2005, and now it is used by my four-year-old son). This new machine comes with 2GB RAM, 250 GB HDD and Intel Core-Duo 2.4 GHz CPU. I am quite delighted with it's performance. Even running with 6 virtual desktops through Leopard's spaces, and 2 virtual machines (Vista and Ubuntu) at the same time, it performed amazingly well. I was so surprised to see the action. Of course, the cool thing about this, I can run all the greatest operating systems in one machine...
By the way, I set up synergy to use my main keyboard and mouse with my MacBook when I am in the office. I would highly recommend it if you have multiple machines and monitors around you :)
PS: I am using VMware's Fusion and Sun's VirtualBox for virtualization. Fusion really provides near-native performance, and things work smoothly. I tried Parallels desktop virtualization before, although not in my new MacBook but on Vista. Based on that experience, I believe VMware performs better.

UCSD Supercomputer Center & Calit2 Visit (2 April 2008/Wed)
In the second day of the ICSTC, we went to visit UCSD Supercomputer center and Calit2 (California Institute for Telecommunications and Information Technology).
Yes, we have seen some cool things including scientific visualization...
My first visit to the supercomputer center was in 2001. This time I was able to get some pictures :)

NetBeans 6.1 Beta Ready!
Do you use java as your mainstream programming language? Do you have your favorite IDE? I bet you do! But hey, don't be shy, go ahead and try NetBeans IDE, you will be pleasantly surprised.
It's one of the best productive IDEs available in the market today. It's open source, and freely available for all. What are you waiting for? :)

Zoho and G.ho.st
Last month (22 Feb 2008/Fri) I signed up for AdventNet's office productivity suite called Zoho.
Being web-based, all applications from the suite are OS independent. I found the whole application quite successful in many ways.
Also, same week, I started testing the g.ho.st (an online OS). These two online products are really worthwhile to pay attention.
Go try them, you won't be disappointed.
PS: I wonder who will attempt to buy them first :) (MS, big G, well I guess not Yahoo, maybe big Blue)?
PPS: Writing about this post reminded me another product that I use and like for a long time: Virtualbox. It is a very good virtualization product for x86 machines. It was developed by a German company (innotek GmbH), and recently bought out by Sun Microsystems. Sun also recently (26 Feb 2K8) completed the acquisition of popular open-source database company and their flagship product called MySQL.

iPhone SDK
I know, It's little late to mention this, but I think it is better late than never :)
Apple recently (6 March 2K8/Thr) released the elusive iPhone SDK! Good news for the developers. Looks like Google's Android and iPhone will infuse the technology world with lots of new opportunities.

Microsoft's giving students free access to its developer tools!
Late today (18 Feb 2008/Mon), MS announced the DreamSpark project that opens up access to many students in the world (currently 11 countries listed). Looks like Bill Gates is trying to intensify MS's RIA competition with Adobe.
Again, related with with the web-wars, we will also see what would happen to the MS's Yahoo bid soon :)
Some of the tools available through DreamSpark:

San Diego Barcamp was cool
I attended the SD barcamp couple weeks ago, and I was pleasantly surprised how dynamic and cool it was. Definitely, it's a must-go-event. I would highly recommend to everyone who wants to hear and share information about technology, hacking, Web 2.0 and beyond...
By the way, barcamp is a spin-off of foocamp which was organized by Tim O'Reilly. Whereas foocamp is invitation-only, barcamp is open to everyone who is interested in the technology and web. It is basically small workshop-events whose content is provided by participants.
